Wednesday, January 31, 2007 I am sorry I haven't been posting. No really, I truly am. I have been trying to post for a while now but Blogger has been giving me troubles. I am now logging in through my Google account, which means that I have to use my Skottustelpa login on Gmail, then link to Blogger through there. My attempts to go through Bloggers homepage have resulted in no results, the frame freezes every effin time. For those who don't know already, I can be reached at skottustelpa@gmail.com, the rest of you know where to reach me on my private account. Most of you fortunately use my comment system which is in use as long as I don't get spam there. Enough of the technical stuff. Here's what I've been up to: I have spent hours at IKEA. I am desiging a kitchen that will beat all home kitchens. And a bathroom. Right now waiting for the constructors to give us an offer on the changes we are making on our new house. I am also designing a bathroom from scratch. Our apartment is for sale from April 1st. We get the house a month earlier. We went out there for a visit. The current owners called us and invited us over for coffee. I had not met them before and I really liked them. It was lovely. We got good time to walk around the house and take a closer look. It is such a nice house. It's not a beautiful house, it's not an amazing house. It's a Danish house. A brick house. It's a house with a really, really good feeling. It's a real house where there have lived real people. Happy walls, they said, no accidents or bad things happened in this house. It turned out that they had not done anything to it in the ten years they have lived there. All is done by the guy who lived there before them, Ole the Inventor. Apparently, Ole was a retired sailor so the house has a lot of details connected to weather. Like a Rain-o-meter, a little thing that measures rain. Another thing Inventor Ole did was a sprinkler system in the garden. And the most interesting form for drying laundry I have ever seen in my life. We are ripping that down, by the way. Investor Ole also made his own timberoven (braendeovn) out of an oil barrel. It is a grotesque thing but we are actually wondering if we should keep it. This is what your regular braendeoven could look like: ![]() Ours isn't anything close. I am not sure it was Ole the Inventor or the ones who lived there before him (the ones who built the house) who developed a free-maintanance garden. It turnes out that the garden is in bloom from February until October/November. You don't have to do anything, just watch it grow. It looks kind of wild, yet at the same time organized. Some parts of it look pure bad taste yet the owner said that I would see the purpose of every plant there if I waited a year before I started tearing things apart. There is an apple tree ideal for climbing and grapes and roses and lillies and tulips and rhododendrum and loads of little flowers I don't know what are. And in this garden Minilla's cherry tree will stand. One of the things I am looking forward to the most is the light. We will have a lot of light in our house. It is on a little hill leading down to the lake. We can't wait to move. Labels: News from the home front posted by Skotta | 7:22 AM |Saturday, January 27, 2007 I just want to bring to your notice that the Queen has written an article published on Iceland Review's homepage. The article is great. Read it, read it. For those not familiar with Iceland Review, it is probably the oldest, most respected tourist information magazine published in Iceland. I remember before the days of the internet that a subscribtion to Iceland Review was often a gift to a foreign visitor. Those were the days when you only saw the occational tourist in Iceland, most of them enduring and a bit crazy, if they weren't working for a bank and stayed in a hotel. It was the time when nobody came to Iceland without having dinner and tours to Thingvellir with an Icelandic family, all members dragged with. The ones that returned madly in love with the country were called"Friend of Iceland" or "Islandsvinur". Today, sadly, we drive busloads of tourists around tourist spots, try to rip them off with little respect, tell them all the weirdest stuff about our culture, and try not to have anything to do with them otherwise. Today, Islandsvinur is something said in sarcasm about a Hollywood actor that shows up in town, wondering why the women are so drunk. "Yeah, I'm definetly coming again, the girls are loose!" What Iceland Review had, that no other magazine had, was and is Pall Stefanson. Palli's photos (Palli is short for Pall, another weirdo Icelandic thing, shortenings can be longer than the original name) did the mag. At times there were not that many articles but pages and pages of Icelandic landscapes that would blow your mind. Check out Palli and Nanna. They are the essence of Iceland, a woman with great wit and intelligence and a man with a passion. This is the first time he gets fever so it's a new experience. He's been kinda cute and cuddly. I've quite enjoyed it. This is information I only share with you guys. Labels: General Info posted by Skotta | 10:57 PM |I now have the new version of Blogger. How exciting. As I am not the kind of person who reads the manual I have no clue what this new world means to me. There is a drag and drop function that I find quite interesting. I wonder if I should read the manual and see what it's for? Now I can also label my posts. Hmmm, more creativity needed, must come up with labels. Labels: General Info posted by Skotta | 10:54 PM |Okay, enough with the seriousness and serenity. Lets move over to the fun and games again. Here is a very, very fun video I got from one of my homegirls. This woman gives me excellent links and music all the time and on top of it all she is a gem with a great sense of humor. She and her seniorita just got a new apartment. Hola to them! I'm gonna help them move. I'm driving the truck. Here is the link, sure to bring smiles to all faces, unless you have a serious illness that is making you very, very sad. Enjoy Jaan Pehechaan Ho!

Sunday, January 14, 2007 I am enjoying the last days of my vacation. It is a real vacation because I have my mother taking care of the boy with me and babysitting if I need to leave the house. Which is good because the boy is still snot nosed after getting a minor cold up here. AB is already back in DK working. Me and Minilla leave on Thursday. By the way, people keep asking me why the baby's name is Minilla on this blog. For those who haven't gotten it yet it is Minilla, as in Minilla son of Godzilla. Google it for further info. The month has been eventful. We rented a cottage the first days of January and we also spent a night at my sister's summer house. There were jacuzzis and saunas and nice food. There have been birthdays to attend and people to visit. And the cold we caught that didn't stop me from going to the spa. Twice. I love Iceland. posted by Skotta | 7:33 PM | Wednesday, January 03, 2007 I am having a moment. You know, a minute or ten where you are so present in your own life and amazingly happy you exist. I have had moments before but not a moment like this one. I am having a very zen moment where I am listening to my mother boil traditional haddock and my son sit and play on the floor, babbling. My favorite moment is the moment when I stood on the subway platform in New York having gotten my third signature on my masters thesis, listening to India Arie sing something extremely life embracing. I was so happy I danced. Another moment, where I also danced, was when I came home from the hospital after a week of examinations in the neuro ward. Then I danced the famous "I don't have a spot on the brain" dance to the music of Miriam Makeba. I am not dancing now. I am at peace. I am at peace with myself and I am at peace with the world. I am utterly, totally happy. I am blessed to start a new year in this manner. I wish the same for you all. Happy New Year from the positive energy of Iceland. posted by Skotta | 7:40 PM | |
