Just a short note to wish everyone a happy new year!

I will be spending today preparing a dinner we are throwing a few friends out in Holmen.
For those who don't know, Holmen is a big industrial area, or at least we are having our dinner at a very cool loft space with a great view over the harbor and the fireworks.

Five legs of lamb were bought yesterday during our last minute shopping in Bilka in Fields. And now I have to feed myself to be able to start making the salat.
Just so you know that I have my priorities straight.

I hope I get a nap at some point today or I won't last past midnight.
Until next time ..

I might as well write a post while my man saves the world by killing a few monsters in Half Life.

We had a good Christmas at his mother's house. It was lovely, no Kleenex this year.
Loads of food. Loads of candy. Loads of ...
Needless to say I have only eaten carrots and mandarins today ... and a Big n' Tasty with fries and a McFlurry with Smarties.

Well, here are some of the CD's I got this Christmas.

Martha Wainwright, Martha Wainwright

Stevie Wonder, A Time To Love

Kate Bush, Aerial

I listened to Martha today in the car. Really good CD although I have to say that after number 11 I started looking at the cover to check how many there were ... it kinda felt a bit long, and not because it is a special edition CD with 3 bonus tracks. Still a CD I can totally reccommend.

I listened to a few numbers of Stevie's but not the whole thing and I haven't heard Kate Bush yet. So more of the music later.

Happy holidays!

Today is Thorlaksmessa in Iceland (Saint Thorlak's day).
Today is called Lillejuleaften in Denmark (Little Christmas Eve).

In Iceland we eat a fish called kaest skata (latin name Raja radiata, Danish name taerbe, English name Starry Skate or Stingray) on this day.

This is a very interesting meal that my mother refuses to make on the day before Christmas. Her theory is that it is totally idiotic to make rotten fish in a house you have spent a month cleaning. The smell is "pungent", to say the least.
My dad usually finds a way to enjoy this once-a-year treat by going out and getting it somewhere.

This is a tradition I have not brought with me to Denmark. Thorlaksmessa is still one of my favorite days of the year. During the time I made an annual visit to Iceland, I would go downtown on the eve of this day, do the last shopping on Laugavegur, watch the Peace March, eat good food and meet all my friends. Kind of like mini Christmas, saying happy holidays to the friends before hanging out with family for a couple of days.

So, today is the big day of missing the friends.

And I have some news of friends.
I got a lovely letter from a lovely friend this Christmas. It is one of those elastic friendships that is always there even though contact is sometimes a year between or more. She told me I shouldn't get surprised if I felt her tickle my feat ... I love that.

I just got an e-mail from another friend.
It was kind of a book with news and photos.
And yeah, she just happened to mention that she landed a big fat job and that her boyfriend fell on her knees without hurting himself on the 17th.

I had to re-read that bit. Very happy he didn't hurt himself but why the hell was she telling about this in a Christmas card?

OMG!!! OMG!!!
She's getting married!

We have a loud neighbour.

For those who don't know, his inability to understand that the bass of his speakers and the tapping on the floor he does with his foot has been a issue for the rest of the people in the building for the past two years.
The house, him included, finally realized that this wasn't going to be solved by talking. There are lawyers on the case now and I have come to understand that people just plain and simple want him out. He doesn't pay rent on time, he doesn't do his part of the chores. Everybody has tried to help in every way.

Among other things AB has offered to help him find rehersal space, driven out of town to a store to find good material for isolating his speakers ...

You remember me telling you that he got a girlfriend.
Has not passed our notice as his bedroom is just above ours.

She plays the piano. No bass.
Lovely.

Wouldn't it be just the best possible solution for everybody if the girl was a positive influence and he learned a bit of empathy?
He'd keep his apartment and we'd get peace.

Yeah, when Hell freezes over.

I think I am turning into a bit of a gambler.

You see, my sister collects these christmas ornaments from a Danish label called Georg Jensen. I happen to know what she is missing out of her collection and I have found it, and am bidding on it. It is the third time I do this.
I love it when I can get her this stuff.

When this is written there are 3 hours left until the auction is up and I have the the highest bid. Yay!
I can still loose.
I just want this one badly because they don't make it anymore and she looked everywhere for it when she visited the other day.

I don't gamble. Really.
I don't have the brain for it. I am not the type to try to figure things out and bet on the right horse. It takes to much energy. My addictive behaviour doesn't cover the gambling addiction.

Anyways.
AB brought home two stars to pick between for decorating the tree.
This is very important.
You can't buy the tree unless you have a star. It makes all the difference when picking the size of the tree. We haven't found a star, until today, so this has been a big pickle.
You see, the tree is supposed to be the height up to two star sizes from the ceiling.

You didn't get this, did you?
Between the top of the star and the ceiling is supposed to be a gap the size of the star.
Now we have a star.
Now we can go out and buy our tree!
I don't have to tell you that I didn't invent this vital fact of Christmas tree wisdom.

It just dawned upon me that I am a person who has her own telephone number written on a Post-It stuck to her computer monitor.
AB wrote it down.
I stuck it up there,
What a loving way to help your woman.
I panic and struggle to find this darned number every time I have to say it to someone over the phone. Then I get insecure if I said all the numbers right in Danish. (My Danish is excellent, I get insecure anyways).
Now the number is there every time I look up.

I have the same problem with my last name. Learning how to spell it in German, then English, then Danish ... I always write it down first and then read the letters to the person who needs to write down my name (if I'm not able to snatch the form from her and write it myself).

Maybe it's time to put my name on a Post-It.

A little distraction from things like Christmas and kitchen. And a tribute to my brother, the King of Links, who is now busy ensuring that we all get a good laugh this Christmas.

If there is anything more sexually stigmatized than an Icelandic woman it is a Sweedish one. And maybe a Brazilian one. And a French one. And Italian.

Anyways, you get my drift.
Here is a link to a web-site done by some brilliant Sweedish women.
I got it from Transbuddha (see link on my side bar).

Transbuddha also has a link to a hilarious Korean remix of Gunther's Ding Dong Song. And more, in case you forgot.

For those of you who are looking for a practical Christmas gift for your boyfriend, I have read that guys need this.

And if you weren't sure, then come to this blog, every single day, and you will be told what to do.

They're selling Charlie Brown's Christmas tree at Urban Outfitters. Well, when I checked they had run out of stock.

And in the honor of mothers around the world, here's Mr. T in his tiny panties.
That's special.

We have done the first round of dishes in our new dishwasher.

Of course we had to experiment with this. So the nastiest stuff you could imagine (parts of the stove that were loose but had old dirt on it) was put in there and washed on a program called "Normal". Likewise, some bowls with seriously hard breakfast cerial ... (that was a less voluntary experiment, I must say).

Everything came out shiny! If it wasn't for the fact that the oven cant fit into my new washing maschine, the rest of the stove would get a round.

Actually, the handle fell of the oven door last night.
"We'll talk before we use the oven next time" said wise man AB.
"We'll buy a new one as soon as my apartment deal is through" said wise woman Skotta.
Of course only if he can't screw the darned thing on again.

More things I have threatened to buy during this renovation period: A new bed.

Now, I realize that beds have sentimental values.
And this one has been AB's for a looong time.
It cost a fortune at the time.
And a few nights ago it fell apart.
"Honey, don't move" AB said, veeery slowly.
Not that I needed any incouragement to stay still. The noise woke us up and I didn't really sleep much for the rest of that night but spent some time looking at IKEA's selection of beds in their brochure.

Jump to a few nights later (we seem to be working nights on this renovation project) and there is AB with his screw-machine laughing: "Someone should document this, you standing there and stroking your big belly and me strengthening the bed!".

I of course refuse to admit that my weight has something to do with the bed falling apart and made nasty comments on the gymnastics made on that bed before I came into the picture. After all, it is at least 17 years old!
Oh, the evilness of denial.

But I can tell you this much.
AB found out that the wood is crap.
59 screws went into that bed and I now sleep safe and sound.

Did you know that if you eat a lot of Cheerios, you get soar gums?

Didn't know that, did you?
You thought you'd only get soar gums from Cocoa Puffs.

Well you were wrong. You just need to eat more bowls of Cheerios than Cocoa Puffs to get there.

This type of Cheerios is banned in Denmark. They don't import it because it has stuff in it that they don't want people eating through Cheerios.
This stuff is called vitamins.
I know, I know, sounds absurd.

Danes don't like anything added to food. Food is supposed to be food only with no added vitamins. You can pickle stuff with the most wicked evil perservatives here but that is fine as long as it is done in the country and contains no vitamins.
Funny people, those Danes.
Makes me wonder sometimes why I am making a half-breed here. Remember now. It's because AB has the genetic build of the perfect human.

I love yellow Cheerios. I can get some kind of a white pack of Cheerios here but that isn't my type of Cheerios. That Cheerios has four types of little round tingies in them. I like mine with one type of little round thingies.

This is why my sisters brought me Cheerios. Loads of it.
And now that I have no kitchen I have found out this little wisdom of Cheerios and soar gums. I have eaten a lot of Cheerios lately.

Before I post I read other blogs. Funny enough, I like the web-pages of funny, intelligent people. After reading my full of funny, intelligent stuff, like discussions about feminism and other political issues, I come to my page and blog about soar gums and Cheerios and my kitchen.

Further kitchen developments:
It's painted.
We went early to bed, opening all the windows to to air out the plastic smell, and turned up the heat in the bedroom.
Yes, as now has become my habit, I am blogging between 6 and 7 am.

Now, when I finish telling you about my gums and my kitchen I am going to go into my kitchen and remove all the tape I can without climbing. All the plastic off and all the paper off the floors. AB has set the alarm clock for 8 am to put up shelves with his big drill and move big stuff into place.

Enough about that.
Now I'll go out and take some tape off the walls.

There is no hurrying time.
Time just takes time.

The Danes call the pregnancy "waiting time" (ventetid).
This morning I said to AB - wow, I'm going to be pregnant for many more months!
That's great, he answered, it suits you.

The man adores my body.
My body is a temple.
Right now, the Baby's Temple.
AB is not interested in it in any other way, but as such it is praised and adored.
I love him.

Still 4 months to go.
3 people said to me the day before yesterday something along the lines with: "You must be close to giving birth now ... "
I've stopped telling people I am going to keep growing until April. They just get embarrassed and shocked and I stopped getting a kick out of that after the 5th time. Can't say the other fibroid women didn't warn me.
My waistline was 117 cm last week (that's 45,6 at 21 weeks, to you measuring in inches). I am not weighing myself anymore.

And I am not tall.
I already look like a duck and walk like a duck.
If I sound negative it is because I haven't been to the gym in two weeks and am going today.
Grumpy.

More things take time.
Many of you know that we just bought a dishwasher.
And we got a plumber.

Mustafa the plumber stayed for a day and bonded with AB. Mustafa's girlfriend is also pregnant. We will get a huge bill.
Mustafa was a sweetheart and a very good plumber.

Since the whole thing was out of place anyway, AB decided we might as well paint. At the same time, he got heaps to do at work, and a welder became ready to remove the body of the jeep AB chrashed in the Icelandic mountains last summer. AB has been working, attending to jeep, and working on the kitchen into the night.

(Just on a side note, they actually took a drive in the jeep .. yes, the same jeep that rolled over three times in rocky mountains. It's in mint condition, only the body got crushed. We now reccommend the Mercedes Benz 300 series to anyone who want's to hear about it.)

The house is a 150 years old and as askew as a house can get. It is very much alive. Filling up gaps has been such hard work. Painting our tiny kitchen has taken days!

We are expecting dinner guests tonight and will have to take them out to eat because of the state of the apartment. Friday's dinner guests are coming Saturday. This will give me a chance to put the kitchen back into the kitchen once AB has finished painting.

We were going to finish last night.
I had miraculously gotten permission to help. AB had refused me access to the kitchen after he caught me taping the ceiling with one foot on a stool and the other on the kitchen sink. My gymnastics freaked him out and all work higher than I could reach standing on the floor.
With a washing maschine, dishwasher, and the stove out on the stamp we call our kitchen floor (dryer is in the closet we call hallway and fridge on top of the washing maschine), there was no room for both me, AB and the belly. I kept getting a corner of a machine into my belly. I eventually gave up.

Until last night.
I got to paint.
For 5 seconds.
Then AB freaked over the plastic smell from the paint and threw me out of the kitchen again.
"There is NO WAY I am allowing you to breathe this in!!!"

My bruised hormones gave me a lump in my throat.
I love painting.

AB got close to finishing. He did all the details and all walls but one. Then he ran out of paint.
He is out for the rest of the day and will roll over this one last wallwhen he comes home tonight. It will take him about 10 minutes.
After the wall is dry, I am allowed to help again.

For someone who painted her little kitchen all by herself in her old apartment, with a chalk board and all, not being allowed to go near this project is really hard.
Not only could I have done it by myself while he is at work during the day, and finished it in no time, but also done it quite well! You see, I am not so bad at painting.

Apart from remembering that I am not to walk from the kitchen into the living room without checking my feet first.

Richard Pryor has passed on.

The man was a walking miracle. While free-basing cocaine in the early 1980's he sat a fire that nearly killed him. He later described the incident in a stand-up so hilarious, yet so crazy, that we used it to show our clients at the substance abuse treatment center I worked at in NY. Our clients loved it, he spoke to them and they identified. Not many know that it was in fact a suicide attempt. His management created the "accident" lie for the press in hopes of protecting him.

I have always admired Pryor for becoming sober and not being afraid to share about it in the way he knew best; through humor. The man was a hero.

Yet another Miss Iceland has won the Miss World title.
That's breeding for you.

Unnur Birna

There are a few thousands of her in Iceland, most of them blond though.

The other two Icelandic Miss World winners were Hofi

and Linda P.

Hofi was a chick who loved baby sitting. She kept on doing that after winning her title.
Linda became a business woman and a famous alcoholic. I don't know what she is up to today but her life story is already out. Always sad when that happens early.

I can't say these women have made me proud to be Icelandic. Other Icelandic women have made me proud to be Icelandic. I know it is hard work but so is becoming the world's first female president.
But hey, we can't all be president.
Some of us have to settle for Miss World.
And then get a telegram from the President and his wife with all the best to the family.

Happiness is one of the best movies ever made. Maggabest just published a link to Todd Solonz website and I nicked it of course to remind you of this genious.

It shows how I am out of the real movie world and stuck in the Danish movie world that I didn't know that Palindromes was out. I can't wait to see it. How to get my hands on it though, legally, is going to be a trip. Real movies rarely make it to Denmark as Blockbuster seems to be the main venue for rented films.

Nicked this from the Queen. I think it's a Dutch man's version of the Icelandic tale around the 13 "Santas". Our version is a bit more grusom but hey, it's funny so read it.

Otherwise, I have been spending this morning reading the Queen's Christmas Calender.
Many favorite parts but as a sample, here's one I love. The Gnomes who are to get Jesus diaper (have to read to understand about Jesus diaper) have just got a fine for not buying a ticket in the Danish subway:

"500 kr! what the hell!" Sumsar shouted, Sumsar had bought a ticket, unable to be untruthful and callous (also a very unorhodox trate gnome and humans alike)
"Yeah yeah yeah, lets get over it okey. We should be happy we are in charge of christmas! We will be famous. The Grant money alone is insane"

Explanation: The Grant money is a trust fund set up by Hugh Grant (yes the famous actor)after he was the voice for Blitzen the reindeer in the cartoon "Legend of the lost tribe". Wanting to get in the christmas spirit he offered to set up a "Grant" (a yearly prize given to those who release christmas) in exchange for an early sniff of christmas spirit... you know to get into the role... not cause he's kinky or anything...

And after discovering that the diaper has disappeared from Zlatko, the lone physical protector of Christmas (Jesus diaper), A Team Kobmands Kiosk in Hvidovre Denmark:

"Listen Zlatko," her matter of fact tone had returned and Zlatko could tell she meant business "now, my mother gnome- Ajizarg- married a serb, now he was a decent guy, but i know you balkan men, relying on your mothers for everything till your in your 60's. So it is with immense power and threat that I say, hand over the loincloth or I am telling your mom."

I just want to add that Zlatko's Mummutta has a Peugeot 1007.
I ain't the only one finding this funny.

Okay,status:
The apartment is a mess. The kitchen moved into the living room yesterday. Once we had the dishwasher we got all excited and decided to paint the kitchen. My sister is coming today and there is no place to sit down in the apartment.
Plumber is on his way to make holes in the kitchen floor. We know that the plumber doesn't know the greatness of the job ... the jokers in his office put "various plumbing work" on his work order. Hell, they were on their 2nd beer, it was already closing time when we got there Friday.
It's a Danish thing.

I better run out to 7/11 and get us some milk for breakfast.
When all of this is over I am going to decorate uncontrollably.
I guess I am getting into the Jesus diaper of things.

Armed with a glass of skimmed milk and some Icelandic chocolate covered vanilla candy called Bombur, I now decide that there is a time to do the dishes and a time to blog.

This being the time to blog.

Whoha, have I been busy.
In order of appearance:
There was my sister.
There was shopping.
There were German dinner guests.
There was a premiere of Bang, Bang, Orangutang.
There was babysitting.
And there was a Fugees concert.

Lets start with the sister.
She is the bringer of joy and food and candy and AB's birthday present. We had an amazing time which included me having a fit of laughter at a cafe downtown, a fit that resulted in me having to run to the bathroom so I wouldn't pee in my pants, and some seriously sore stomach muscles for two days afterwards.
(I have another sister coming next weekend, I will have just recovered).

I am being so good now, I am putting the candy away.

Anyways.
There was a day of powershopping, with me functioning as shopping assistant. This meant me and belly sitting down and watching the bags while sister did some browsing. This was a very convinient arrangement so I am going to suggest it for next weekend.

We had a lovely couple visiting from Germany. They had dinner at our house (AB magically producing the meal of the century in no time) and then we all went to the premiere. German friends brought gifts so now the baby has his first plate and cup. Very cute with a teddy.

The movie was good. Great soundtrack and great color. Very good script and decent acting. Dark humor. I like.
It will be trashed by the media, for sure.

After hanging out with one of my best friends yesterday (picked him up in kindergarten and hung out on the way home, visiting the laundromat and looking at the washing machines and other cool stuff), I picked up my homegirl and went to the Fugees concert.

Mmm. Wycleaf don't fail yah. Lauren stood sweating and seemd a bit worned out. It could have been the outfit, they all wore loads of clothes. Winter jackets and woolly hats on stage.
I don't think the house carried the ample of the band. It was either their sound man or the house, either way, there was a lot of relay and noise that was uncomfortable for the audience. This kinda meant that people were hard to keep, the crowd kept moving around, buying beer and peeing.
Lauren threw in a couple of her numbers, otherwise there was nothing really new. Hearing your band take all your old favorites works fine, the whole thing sounding messy is a bit of a shame.
We hung in there anyways, and were eventually glad we did.

Whatever, we had a good time and the boy in the belly gave me couple of kicks but fell asleep as soon as I started dancing. I saw at least 4 other prego's so he was in good company.

Having covered the weekend activities (apart from the visit to the midwife) I am free to report about other events in my life.

We bought a dishwasher.
HUGE event. Much talked about but finally duable and the thing is arriving today.

Our neighbor died. Not as huge but very sudden and saddening.
She was an old white haired lady with a mean tounge and a heart of gold. Just a couple of weeks ago she told me I could come up anytime if there was anything I needed. Most people who have come around my house knew her. She talked to everyone. She took her dogs out many times a day so you would frequently meet her on the stairs.
I will miss her. She made the house human.
I wonder what is going to happen to her husband. He has stone lungs and can't take the stairs. He never leaves the house.

And last but not least:
I don't know if you read the Queen (see link on this page's side bar).
Well, she is posting daily now and I really want you to check out her site. She is writing a Julekalender. For those who don't know, a Julekalender is a Christmas calender. This tradition is hugely popular here in Scandinavia. The calender takes all shapes and sizes and goes from December 1st to the 24th. Some burn a candle with marks for each day, some make a little calender with a daily gift, some write a bed time story for their kids ... and some blog about a gnomes.

Now go read it, it's funny.

I have an interview with the unemployment office on the 12th.
My union pays me the same amount now unemployed as I got for working 32 hours a week. I can get this money for the next 6 years if I need to.
The rules are that I activly look for work during the time I am getting this money.

Always the good girl, I want to abide by the rules.
So, I thought, since I am awake anyway, I might as well do a little browsing.

I haven't been that "actively searching" since I know that as soon as an employer sees my HUGE belly their other candidates for the job will become more appealing. At least everyone who wants a worker who will work for them after April 1st. Employers also see me as someone fragile, and someone who might have to quit a month or more before the birth. In Denmark you can start your pregnancy leave a month before your due date, which means March 11th for me, and many women go on sick leave before that if there are problems.

Another not so encouraging factor is that other options are a part time job or temp jobs that don't pay as much as I am getting from my union.
I have been quite happy getting the amount I get for no work.

But, good girls play by the rules so I took a peak.

Little did I know that I would find one of the jobs I'd love to have.
Now I am sad.
According to the rules I can apply. If I got lucky enough to get an interview they would take one look at me and think I'm an idiot for waisting their time.
I have applied for jobs at this place before and not gotten a job and I don't want to ruin my chances of getting a job there in the future.
Right job, wrong time.

I wonder if the person who will be facing my big belly at the unemployment office will see things in a different way.
I don't really care as long as I get my money. I have the rest of my life to work after my pregnancy leave and the only thing I can hope for is that another good job or even a better one is installed for me when the time is right.

I am up at 6 am, partly due to hunger, partly do to excitement because my sister is coming for a visit over the weekend. I am picking her up at the airport tonight.

Copenhagen is so still that I can hear that there is a fire somewhere. The sound of fire engines.
And AB snoring loudly.
I like that.

I wonder if my boy in the belly will like fire engines. Or maybe he'll be like his father and love helicopters. Or maybe he'll be like my nefiew who likes the Barbie with the longest hair and prettiest dress.

I don't really care. I just hope that as an adult he can live with himself and be happy like me and his dad managed to do.

I am so proud of Icelandic men right now.

Generally I like men. I have to say though, that today Icelandic men have taken initiative that shows that they cut above the rest. Let me explain.

I just read this article. Unfortunately it's in Icelandic but here it is for the once who can read it.

To others, let me explain more clearly.
Today, men in Iceland are having a conference about equal rights between women and men. The only woman attending is our former president, Vigdis Finnbogadottir, who was the first female president in the world.
The reason she gets to sit in on the conference is because it is inspired by her words, that she believed that nothing would ever be achieved in the equal rights battle until men sat down in a closed room and discussed the matter by themselves.

I am proud of Icelandic men because they are reaching the understanding that equal rights between the sexes is, and quoting Arni Magnusson (as he is quoted in the article mentioned above); "about improving society and quality of life, and therefor a matter that concerns both sexes". He also pointed out that men, just as women, had to make sacrifices that affect the family.

It seems that this particular group of men are truly Men of Action. (I like that about men, sometimes I get the notion that women are much better at talking than doing ... although I know that this isn't entirely true). Arni told that they have started working on extinguishing the difference between the wages of men and women. Time will tell if this means improvements.
One thing is sure, and that is that these men are raising awareness.

It is important for both women and men to realize that this has to be a joint accomplisment. I cannot describe how much creating a baby, going through pregnancy, and starting a family, has opened my eyes to the fact that men have the same wishes and needs to a family life. They have the same need to participate, the same need longing to be with their partner and kids.
Call me naive, but I didn't have a clue.
I thought it was a woman thing.

Today, protecting my partners right to his child, time with his child, time with me, and our joint battle to ensure that our little family can have full share in each others lives, is one of the most important goals in my life.

I know of a fellowship that has these funny traditions. Their first tradition is that their mutual velfare must come first, the well being of the individual depends of the society's unity.
Icelandic men seem to be working on that very issue. Let the good news travel fast and hope this action spreads like jam.

Now thank the Suffagrettes who started all of this business.

And on a last note ...
My horoscope this week tells me to "Ignore the cynical masochists who preach doom and gloom, and take up the cause of zoom and boom."
I hear yah, Mr. Bresny.
