A quick update:

I spent Christmas with AB family. It was really, really nice and festive. The tree had real candles on it, and it was beautiful.
We ate:

Shrimps and mini eggs from tiny birds.
Smoked salmon.
Salad.

Rib steak with the works.
Duck with foi gras.

Ris รก la mand.

Cake. Candy.

After all the eating we played a game which lead us to the presents. I got a lot of tissues. Tis the season. I would have been sad if it were not for the fact that I am totally spoiled by my Amazing Boyfriend, and that a mountain of presents were waiting for me in Iceland.

And here I am now. In Iceland.
Sick as a dog, due to the fact that I only had my sneaks with and mr. & mrs. Orgasm.

Now I have a soar throat, and brand new boots.
Best X-mas present (apart from the tickets to here and to NY, which I got from my boyfriend) is without a doubt the book my brother gave me.
It is titled "Skottustelpa, the Continuing Saga".

I am now awailable in print, two copies made. My mother has one, I have the other.

AB: What do we need other than toilet paper?
SSt (blogging): Are you leaving me?
AB: Well, I'm going to get myself a burger or something. Do we need anything?
SSt: Ice cream. We only have chocolate.
AB (laughing): Oh, trauma in the house, we only have chocolate ice cream.
SSt: Why do you think it's still in the freezer?

Now there is just so much luuuuv going on in this house.
You may puke now, but it wont stop me from blogging about it. Because I know you're reading me!

My counter hit a thousand today.
AB says it must be the FBI. I love the idea of them reading about my ice cream situation.

I am listening to Rammstein.

No worries, they are moving the location of the Coca Cola ad to Denmark.
Yesssss! (movement done with fist in the air, turned hand on the way down with elbow to breast).

I need to brag:

Amazingly talented boyfriend has been nominated again for the Robert Prize. For those who don't know, the Robert is the Danish equivalent to the Oscar. He's not going to win because they don't give it to the same person two years in a row, and he won last year.

I am very, very proud of him. He works really hard and this nomination is well deserved.

Not to dramatize ...

SCREAM!!!!!

Boyfriend got a violent job offer to do an ad for Coca Cola for an unhealthy amount of money.
Violent job offer means shooting (as in filming) a famous soccer star, and travelling to Africa.
Violent job offer possibly means cancellation of trip to New York.
Or me going alone.
Or me giving his ticket to a friend.
Or both of us going at a later date, which will not go well with my health (neeeeeed a vacation!!!!) nor my job. I have already asked for time off to go to the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Anyone for a return trip from Copenhagen to NY, all expenses paid? Well, maybe not all. Almost all.

I think he could sense the panic in my voice so he told me not to think about it.
Yeah, that's an option.

Not.

I hate these luxury problems. Before I had normal problems, like, how do I find the money for my bills, and shit, I got kicked out and need a roof over my head.
Now I have problems like, "where do I want to go out to eat tonight?". Not that I am ungrateful (are you hearing me God? I'm not complaining, so no changes in my current luxurious existance with my Amazing Boyfriend), but life sure has taken a weird turn.

I have promised myself that I will never forget what it was like being broke. I truly believe that being broke is unhealthy and unhuman. Not knowing where you are going to spend the next month, or how the hell you are going to make ends meet, is a violation of human rights. This is one of the reasons I moved away from America. I believe that all people have the right to afford a proper burial for their family members.

I will never take a penny for granted, I will always remember the wear and tear of the worries.

Whoa, that helped.
I can actually remember now what real worries are like.
The NY thing will go fine. Whichever way it goes.

Oh Christmas tree ...

I am listening to Christmas carols, getting myself in the mood for tomorrows Christmas party at work. The one with the kids and their parents.
I have to say, I don't know that many Danish carols. I am learning them, and two of my favorite ones are about the Christmas tree. Problem is that I mix them up.
I asked my boyfriend to sing them to me, so I could learn them, but he said he couldn't because he ate too much.

What I really like about one of the carols is that the text says that first the tree is to be looked at, then to be eaten.
I find this so funny, that the line got stuck in my head. I sing constantly about the Christmas tree that is to be eaten.

The text is not surreal, the Danes actually cooked soup of the tree. I am sure other nations did that too. The tradition of eating pine never reached Iceland though, and I have to say, I am fine with it.

I really want to learn the carols so I am finding them on the internet. And the national anthem.
Scary.

I better stop now.

Me and my man have booked our tickets to NY.

I really can't wait to go. Although I opted for living in Europe, I love New York as the place I really started growing.

Here is one of my favorite places in NY:

By Union Square I have had my most wonderful moments in NY. My first real connection with USq was when I worked the Christmas market, the year I was illegal. I stood there for the month of December, freezing my arse off, begging the near by deli to let me use their toilet on a daily basis. In the booth next to mine there was a woman selling scented candles. In the booth across, an Israeli woman sold her jewellery and tops with Chinese letters on them. We had a great time.

At Union Square I had my lunch a few times a week during the summer I attended classes at Baruch on 23rd st. I observed many people eat lunch there, read quite a bit of abnormal psychology, and once bought a voucher for a massage from a nice woman.

I have seen kids break dance at the square, and I have made dates with many friends there. I have sat there and talked on my mobile phone for hours. I have waited at Union Square, I have hung out. I have taken all lines passing in every direction at Union Square.

My favorite stores are by Union Square. Barnes and Noble, Virgin Megastore, Illuminations (up Broadway), and there used to be a Love drugstore around there somewhere. Not so far off are Forbidden Planet (comics), Strand Bookstore, and Quad cinema. When I got my masters I bought myself a really expencive Sony CD walkman at the big store by the square that sold electronics, I also bought my cd player there. I have eaten numerous triangle shaped breads at Cosi Sandwich Bar, which is also nearby.

Many Icelanders have worked at the Farmers Market at Union Square. I have bought fruits, and flowers at that Farmers Market, and chatted quite a bit with fellow (broke) artists working there. I have looked at postcards and CD's there.

After my best friends bridal shower, I walked down to Union Square with two of the balloons from her shower, and let them go, in the honor of the happy couple.

Yes, I have to say, that Union Square, with Gandhi and all, is my favorite place in New York.

Year End Round-Up

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?
Went to Rome. Had the best year of my life.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
New Years what?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Oh yes. Babies popping out all around me this year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Familymember yes, close to me, no. But someone I cared about.

5. What countries did you visit?
This year I only wen't to Iceland and Italy. I have been in Iceland twice, and will be there again before the year is out.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?
Now that is a tough one. I have had the best year of my life. I can hardly imagine it getting better. I have everything I need in life. The only thing I don't have yet is a baby, and I am not sure that I will have one by the end of the year. Let's see. But yes, I would like to get prego.

7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
January 10th. First date with Amazing Boyfriend lasted from the 10th to the 12th. Unforgettable, completely.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting a great group of kids together, giving them a great time, a lot of love, and a place to grow. It took a while to get there, but it was a fantastic ride. Only thing that could possibly top that, was getting that lollipop that stuck in the little girls throat. Scary as hell, but I reccomment first aid courses to anyone who ever works with or has kids.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I can't say that I have failed horribly at any point this year. I have made a couple of human mistakes and had a few fits of drama.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No, not this year. Healthy as a horse. Got pneumonia for a month, does that count?

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Marc Jacobs, hand made, high heeled, black leather boots.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I could name so many. I have to say the Queen, for surviving the stress of Danish burocracy during registration for school. The new mothers of the year. My family who should be celebrated constantly. My mom and dad who decided to sell their house after 34 yrs of living there. Anyone who made a big decision and stuck with it. My man for all his achievements this year. My great friend who is allowing herself to enjoy the pleasures of dating, for the first time in her life. My own, for not running away from a good thing, and for running away from a bad thing.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
There have been a couple of people who have managed to push far enough to cross my otherwise very elastic boundaries. It's made me more appalled, and surprised, than depressed.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Like usually, my money went into general living expenses. A lot of it disappeared into a big bill my dentist sent me.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The first message my boyfriend left on my answering machine. Hearing it on my cellphone made me scream outloud on the street, startling some bypassers.

16. What song will always remind you of 2004?
Aftermath - Kashmir
You're the Storm - Cardigans
So what? - DAD
Between You & Me - DAD

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:i. happier or sadder?
I was quite content this time last year. I am definetly happier. I am practically ecstatic.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Hmmm ... excersize?

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I spent a month where I had to fight work related thoughts every night before falling asleep. I would have loved to skip that.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I will be spending Christmas with my boyfriends family. First time Danish style.

22. Did you fall in love in 2004?
Oh, yes I did. Over and over again, with the same man.

23. How many one-night stands?
Zero. First date lasted two nights and has been very steady ever since.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
I don't have TV.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't hate people. I pity them. Muahahahaha...

26. What was the best book you read?
Let me see, have I read a book this year? Oh, yeah, started two, they were both crap. Best book read has to be Hypnotoads latest book, which I expect to have read by the end of the year. He says it is better than his first two, and I believe him.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Some Danish rock, like DAD.
Scissor Sisters.
Have been doing a lot of revisiting old favorites lately, which is great.
And then of course the GiantStep jukebox.

28. What did you want and get?
Boots. Boyfriend.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Can't say I have seen anything that has made film history. Terkel i knibe, Hero, and the Incredables, to name the most memorable ones. Funny enough, two of them are annies.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I have to admit that I can't remember. I think I have to ask my boyfriend, we had just met each other and I can't remember if I spent the day with him, or if I celebrated with my closest friends. I probably managed to do both, he was inviting me to fancy restaurants all the time. I have two birthdays a year, and I will only tell that if I add it up, I celebrated 36 years this year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I can't think of a thing. Maybe the perfect job (which comes with the perfect salary, needless to say).

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?
Relaxed 1973-1978. Vintage mixed with sporty. French Connection, H&M, Churches Flea Markets, Hummel and Addidas. Very cute and sexy.

34. What kept you sane?
Oddvar during the first months of the year. Boyfriend after the relationship deepened.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Making faces over this one.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
War in Iraq, USA's continuous abuse of human rights.

37. Who did you miss?
My family. Citycat29.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Boyfriend. And I have a feeling my latest collegue will turn into a good friend. She is Japanese and has many qualities I would love to have. Like an open heart and the ability to be non-judgemental. And to make sushi.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:
Not really a new lesson, more like a lesson repeated: stay away from sick people. I seem to be getting better at spotting sick environments, and getting out before I get sucked in.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Get a hold of yourself. Don't worry about the aftermath.

Okay, just made a looooong post.
Spent most of the evening on this post, while making chicken drum sticks.
Then Explorer encountered a problem and had to close down.

Genious post gone.

Arrghh.

Should have spent the evening watching a movie!

Whatever.

I was probably just being an arrogant bitch anyway. Had written that Danish babies look weird and that Julefrokost at work was ridiculous.

They do, and it was.

I love my job. I work with crazy people and weird looking, hard to find charming kids. I am having the time of my life with the little monsters, and enjoying biking to work again.

Life is beautiful.

I am enjoying having a little money this month, and am spending it all on gifts for my man. He deserves a little pampering these days.
I can't wait for his car to arrive.

Yawning now.

Better stop my collage making and go to bed.

Okay, I am famous for forgetting birthdays.
This has plagued me, and has always been a great source of guilt in my life.

I am the youngest of 7, and feel lucky I remember all their names.

Plus those 6 birthdays I forget every year, I have two parents alive, who also have forgettable birthdays.
Those 6 siblings of mine, have 6 partners in crime, who have even less memorable birthdays. Together, these 12 people have birthed 18 children. This brings the number of hard-to-remeber birthdays to 32. As far as I know, 7 of the children are either married or in a relationship (39 birthdays). Those relationships have produced at least 3 babies so far, with the 4th on the way.

So in my immediate family there are 42 birthdays at the time being.

Then there is my boyfriend (b-day #43). I have made a decision to have him take care of remembering his family's birthdays.

I have LOADS of friends.
Now my friends have started making babies too.

Many of my friends and family members celebrate 2 birthdays a year.
It's a special thing, I know. We're funny that way.

So why do I feel guilty, when it is obvious that I have to remember at least 60 birthdays a year?

Because my sister Gwelda does.

Don't ask me how she does it.
But she does.
It's one of those amazing things about my sister, she totally rememberes all birthdays.
And I seem to remember her always being able to pull up a perfect little present for whomever had a birthday, or show up with stuff from the baker, or at least phoning people or sending an e-mail.
I adore this ability of hers, as it has made my heart jump for joy two times a year for the past ... well, a lady doesn't tell.

I never, ever remember birthdays, and I have always, as long as I can remember, been too broke to buy those 40 presents a year, plus Christmas presents.
I wen't through the I'll-write-them-Christmas-cards phase, and the I'll-take-the-kids-on-an-outing-and-buy-icecream phase.
I think I have pretty much given up on both and am now celebrating my siblings moving slowly but surely into their 50's (not-so-fertile age). At least they won't be making so many more of them. Women in my family have been known to make babies well into their 40's (my mum was 42 when she had me), and the men are a very active bunch.
Unfortuately, (but of course fortunately as we obviously love babies), the 18 children born to my siblings so far, are just starting.

And I haven't even had one yet!!!
(This page will be the first to get the good news, promise).

Anyways.
My solution to my f**k-it-I-forgot-another-birthday problem was to make myself a 1 page birthday-calender, where everyone is listed.
My problem is, that I never remember to check it.
When I do check it, it's like, oh yeah, this and this and this one have birthdays this month ... birthdays then forgotten immediately.

And this is why I am blogging about all of this: I just checked my calender.

A very good friend, one very, very, close to my heart, has a birthday now on the 10th.

Now, don't get offended, friend born on the 7th, nefiew born on the 15th, niece born on the 19th, nefiew born on the 24th, brother born on the 24th, nefiew born on the 29th, nefiew born on the 30th, or anyone else I am forgetting.

Happy birthday to the new mom in NY, now on the 10th, just in case I forget.

Here's a balloon for you

What I will never forget, is the fact that on New Yrs Eve, a year ago, in an old theater in Reykjavik, a very brave man asked me to dance. His bravery and charm begot him my telephone number.
