Monday, December 29, 2003 Okay, no movies for us tonight. Nature one, human spirit zero. Who said there was no Higher Power. There are just some things in life one can't control. One being the Icelandic weather. Jeep was available, but the idea of driving it to the movies insane, knowing that people sit on the roads stuck in their cars. So me and Hullboy will not go to T.G.I. Friday's on a Monday. Dinner and a movie sounded good though. Sitting together in a jeep this evening sounded good too, but we decided it just wouldn't be the same. Hmmm, what to do tonight, I wonder? Knit. posted by Skotta | 8:48 PM | Snowed in today. Snow up to the knees. Not that it stops my friends taking me to the movies. They borrowed a jeep. I don't know if Sys is reading this but if you are... I am not sporting the title Hotel Manager, next summer. Yup, decided not to apply. My shakes are now in the body of my beautiful friend B, whom I incouraged to take the Manager post. She kicks ass so she'll fly through it. I, on the other hand, am calm in the snow. I will always be Mountain Girl, and the Snowflake of snowflakes. (Just next summer biking to the beach in Denmark). Hail to those who raised me for the past 30 years and the past 3. To thy own self be true. ... and if I change my mind, there are 14 hotels in the chain so I can just pick another one... posted by Skotta | 4:58 PM | Sunday, December 28, 2003 Day of big decisions Yep, it's a hard one. The topic is: Am I going to apply for a job that requires me to leave my happy home in Copenhagen for 4 months in 2004? I'd spend May in Reykjavík and then the next 3 months up North. I have done this before. It is doable. The big question is, will I go insane? Seriously folks, if I take this job it will take all my willpower and a lot of dicipline to keep my sanity. The energy here is completely fucked up. I went to a party last night. No drugs, just alcohol. 4 people got their hair cut, one guy had a facial, two guys ended up doing one girls nails, and women who normally don't wear make-up ended with Carmen rollers in their hair and heavy 50's make up. All males were straight. Then we went out. Little girls in mini-skirts and stillettos everywhere, at 5 am in the ice and snow, -10 degrees celsius. After standing in a line outside a bar, where I ended up not getting in because my friend came out instead, I jumped into a place where I could thaw before going home. I like having a brother who drives a cab. Gets you home safely. ... especially when you find out outside your house that you left your keys in the other jacket. Actually, I think the energy was so weird because most people were hung over from the night before. My timing was just bad. Except for Hullboy. He didn't drink the night before. He repeated all sentences 3 times. Come to think of it, he does that sober too. Yay, I'm going to the movies with him tomorrow night! And Loa who has the same brain I have this Christmas. posted by Skotta | 4:35 PM | Saturday, December 27, 2003 My mom just caught me blogging. My blogaholic true self now ashamed. 5:35 am, morning paper just coming through the post opening thingie that I can't remember what is called in English. I could kill my friend who woke me up at 2 am. I had slept 2 hours, hoping to get my hours straight after totally fucking up my sleeping rythm. It is allmost constantly dark here in December! I don't want to sleep during those few hours of daylight we get. Hmm, time for breakfast maybe? Neh, I'll try to go back to bed. posted by Skotta | 6:22 AM | Okay, I know I'm insane, it's 5:20 am and I am still by the computer. But guys, this one was to good not to let you know about. I love arabic but fortunately Raed translates so it's a bi-lingual site. Note that her posts are by Faiza, Khalid, Majed, and Raed are her sons. Dear Raed is the only thing I count on when it comes to news from Irak. Today, Salam Pax tells that they have been bombing the past three nights. Loads of facts there the international media ignores. posted by Skotta | 5:22 AM | Again, shocked by the results: posted by Skotta | 5:03 AM | Blogger's new look is freaking me out. Okay, on with X-mas. Where to start? Well, I arrived safely at my parents house at 1 am on the 20th. Half an hour later my sis drops by to say hi. Then a brother and a sister-in- law. In bed very late that night. Woke up early the day after. Trying hard to remember now what I did... Well, to make it short, in the first few days I managed to meet two brand new baby girls, both adorable, see a play at the City Theater (Street Car Named Desire), see a great gig at the National Theater's basement club (saw an Icelandic band called The Funerals, who recently got good rewiews in the NY Times), go out clubbing and dance for hours (old clubs, new names), and go swimming in -10 degrees celsius (no way describing swimming in geothermical water). And spend ridiculous amounts of money on X-mas presents. So is life in Iceland. I have met up with all my favorite people now. I feel good. And I have a cold. The same cold stopped me from going out clubbing tonight. I must be aging. The weird part is, that I have had to tell myself constantly tonight that I am not missing out on anything.... except those three parties I was invited to this evening... It is now allmost 4 am and I am awake because my partying friends woke me up at 2 and I have not been able to fall asleep yet. Well, I will look all fresh and perky tomorrow and not permanently attached to a roll of toilet paper. I will be the only person in town not suffering from a hang over, apart from the 15 thousand Icelandic members of Alcoholics Anonymous who attend the 330 weekly meetings over here. Those will just be tired from partying all night. posted by Skotta | 4:22 AM | Monday, December 22, 2003 I was going to start telling you about my exciting 48 hours in Iceland so far, but then my mother started playing Cristmas carols downstairs on the piano and I just have to join the kids singing. Is my life for real? posted by Skotta | 3:09 PM | Tuesday, December 16, 2003 Okay, I have a few things today: First of all, something really weird and scary is happening with my Hotmail account. I am not receiving junk mail!!!! This has not happened before, I am totally freaked out by it. I have had 1 (one!) junk mail in the past 72 hours. Scary! Okay, calming down now. Enough to tell you some funny stories from work today. My co-workers are tripping, they are so stressed that the place is like a volcano. Hence, we decided to take our kids to the movies today. So, today I saw Looney Tunes, dubbed, with popcorn stuffed kids. After the movie, which half of them allmost didn't survive, they were so over stimulated that they were totally crazed. One girl just cried. They don't get out much. I have to tell you about this one kid who is not in my group but a part of the group of the so called "normal" kids. His name is Emil. He will only be friends with kids that are called Emil. It is okay if they are called Jens Emil, or Lars Emil, or Emil Per. He only talks to adults that are called Emil. He therefor communicates with one teacher. And he talks his ear off. The rest of us are totally ignored. And he has confided in those Emils that he hates his mother. Life is sweet but hard sometimes when you are a kid. posted by Skotta | 10:18 PM | Monday, December 15, 2003 Meet my brother: I don't think there is one test he hasn't cheated on! What kind of girl are you? brought to you by Quizilla posted by Skotta | 5:49 PM | Saturday, December 13, 2003 Surprised, anyone? posted by Skotta | 8:40 PM | Last night I got cut off quite suddenly. Let me tell you what happened. My amazing tennant had a friend over because they are supposed to write a paper this weekend. What they are really doing is watching Friends, but that is not a part of the story. At one point. my amazing tennant's little friend went to the bathroom, and I used the oppertunity to call her in. "Sweetie," I said, "can you tell me if there is a smell in here?" My nose now being blocked after ice-skating until my bum frose, she walked around the apartment smelling different things and making her friend in the bathroom very nervous. We didn't find the source of the smell (my tennant refusing to smell my shoes), so we went on working... and watching Friends. Then my red light district window lamp went out. I went over to my lamp and turned it on again. Then I saw the electric outlet glowing. Then I decided to pull the plug. Fire! And what does yours truly do? She runs to her computer and saves her blog. I have no excuse. I am a blogaholic. Then I switched the electricity off the apartment.
I am of course sooooo lying. But I got you, didn't I? Of course I didn't run and save my blog!! Are you crazy?! A true computer junkie has a laptop that runs fine on battery (in case the electricity goes off). Welcome to the world of the Addictive Personality Disorder. What really happened was that I switched the electricity off. And then I saved my blog and turned off the computer (saving the battery of course). I have no electricity and neither does my tennant. In the world of Danish craftsmen, they somehow manage to have one electric outlet in the living room and one electric outlet in the bedroom connected. So when my lamp went out, my tennants computer went out. Which means that to prevent my place from burning down I have to have half the apartment switched off. Of course I called someone last night who told me that it costs a 1000 dkr. plus tax to call out an electrician on a weekend. That brilliant person told me that as long as I pulled the plug on the lamp nothing would happen and I would be able to sleep safely. So I did, and turned the electricity back on. The bloody outlet starts glowing again. And in that situation, what is the safest thing to do? Call the Icelandic electricians (the 3 of them that I know) and get solid advice on how to handle the situation. I wonder if this counts as a near to death experience? posted by Skotta | 11:10 AM | Friday, December 12, 2003 I dream of Iceland... ... where Hullboy is having a party to celebrate his new book that is selling like hot lummur in Reykjavik. I seem to have every night booked this week apart from Tuesday which will probably be used to get my shit together as I am flying out after work on Friday. Highlight of the week will be (ad odrum olostudum): Dullan is coming on Wednesday and we are having a slumber party until I leave, he leaves the day after. It will be just us girls. Oh, yeah! Neh, I'll probably get a blog in before I leave. No blogging for a week, not bloody likely. posted by Skotta | 9:02 PM | Things you find out when you decide that your nose is running like a tap so you better stay home from work: The milk has run out. Laundry can be done. You can go shopping while doing laundry. There is money in your account. There is no way to get a nose spray that doesn't taste bad. That, according to the pharmacist, nose spray only works if your nose is blocked, there is nothing to be done when you have a runny nose... but blow it. That a sweater which washing label reads "pure lambs wool" and "hand wash" should not be washed in the machine. That still further experiments can be done with delicate laundry. That it is amazing how far I will go to save myself some work. That the pre-heated oven will tell you with a nasty smell that it's time to clean it. That you can make brownies anyway. That seen in daylight, your beautiful apartment needs cleaning (I didn't realize how little time I am spending here these days... ). That coffee is something you can't live without. That your nose is still running. That I can fuck up brownies from the pack. That God probably didn't mean for me to be Martha Stewart and Bill Gates in one. That the Platters were on acid when they made their Christmas album (why else sing "Si-high-lent ni-hi-gt").
That you love life and staying home for a day. That you are going ice-skating! posted by Skotta | 12:49 PM | December is a peculiar month. At least in Denmark. I have never been so busy in December. In November, nothing happened. December comes and everything and everybody turns wild. All around me people are going insane. There are parties all over the place, I have to meet a million people. Everybody gets this urge that just says: "Oh, but we must meet before Christmas, I have to see you before you leave for the holidays." I am coming back! Everyone seems to be having sex all of a sudden, people who haven't been doing that stuff for months! What is happening? Be like Christmas - come once a year. Okay, not quite everybody. But romance is certanly in the air. Another thing. My e-mail inbox now gets X-mas jokes and X-mas cards. I have to say, some of those are funny, others quite beautiful. Then there are those that are just plain strange. I don't know what to say. I have creative friends. Today we celebrated Christmas at work. It was mad. Among other things, the kids do this Lucia parade. Picture lots of little kids in white dresses, carrying candles. Except for my kids, they had an electric candle. My role in the parade was to walk behind one of my little ones and pull him into the line when he wandered off. All our kids but one took part in the walk, sang loudly, and made me very proud. The adults around were ready with wet towels and buckets of water in case anyone caught on fire. Apparently, the kids tend to walk too close to each other, or hold the candle too close to their own face... The whole thing went well, no big burns. Afterwards I ran to a friends house and got my hair cut. Babydoll's gone Punk. Other news: Seriously considering running a hotel next summer. Destination Laugar, Iceland. Keep the business in the family, my nefiew ran it last summer, earning the title Hotel Manager of the year with the chain. The cool thing about taking this job is that after the summer I can allow myself to pay some of my bills, travel around Iceland for a couple of weeks, and then go visit NY. That just sounds too good to be true. Two last things. I have a friend in NY that had a birthday yesterday. Typically, I remeberred the week before, the day before, but forgot on the day. Dearest, I love you, many blessings and happy birthday! Then there is another thing. I have a friend in Iceland who just gave birth to a baby girl. I want to congratulate them both on having met face to face after all that wait. Life is beautiful. posted by Skotta | 1:02 AM | Tuesday, December 09, 2003 Hail to the Queen.... of England! Bjork can just forget it. Erykah is the shit. Where do I start? I met God last night. Okay, maybe not God but kind of. The woman is not only God's gift to mankind, she is a proof he/she/it exists. It is amazing that such a woman walks on this earth. Hail to Hip Hop. We waited for an hour to get in, and 45 minutes for the gig to start. Fine with me because she was more than worth the wait. The woman held her audience lika preacher, she sang to us, she talked to us, she danced for us. She loved us and we loved her. She is so happy and she just showers happiness over her audience. Happiness and POWER. Doesn't matter if she is spinning or telling us that God loves us. I was high for hours. She is beautiful and sexy and raw happy power. And God in heaven, what a voice. posted by Skotta | 12:02 AM | Wednesday, December 03, 2003 It's gonna be another busy weekend... starting tomorrow, Thursday.
Oh, yes, it's Erykah Badu. Concert tomorrow night. Which requires some creativity on my behalf when it comes to what to wear tomorrow. 9 AM at work with the kiddies. We are going to bake tomorrow. Ever baked with crazy kids? Let me just say one thing... lot's of flour. Not unlikely that I will have some dough in my hair by the end of my work day. After work I am going out of town to teach my weekly English class. Then rush back with the train into town to make the concert where I kind of don't want to look too strange and sweaty. Anyone want to make a bet on if I make it to the concert intact? Julefrokost on Saturday. We start at 3 pm, go out to Koge where there is a ranch. We have rented a bus, the place has a rodeo, line dancing etc. Free bar and food. My co-workers are going to be totally trashed so the eve will be ... interesting. For those who don't know, Julefrokost is a party every workplace in Denmark has once a year. They get totally wasted togeather, and kind of like at a carnival, everything is allowed. Partners not invited. Afairs are common and fully excused. After all, it was julefrokost... Not that I expect my co-workers to misbehave. We are a very well behaved group... when not torturing the kids. And I am actually looking forward to it, even though it usually freaks me out not having the possibility of leaving if I have had enough. We are going to be at this ranch until midnight and then the bus takes us back into town. Then we are going out dancing. I have millions of other engagements this weekend. Needless to say, I also need to do laundry because I have nothing to wear. Which would be okay because I am allowed to buy some clothes this month but is still a disaster as I have no time to go shopping for clothes. I have a birthday to attend to on Sunday and have no time to buy a present!!! Oh, how terribly hard it is to be so popular. And my sis is arriving tomorrow and I can hardly fit her in my schedule. How superficial has my life gotten? I do nothing but socialize! Fuck it, other people have kids and families. Let me enjoy this while I can. posted by Skotta | 9:36 PM | |
