The Christmas spirit came eventually.

I'm not sure what it was that did it, if it was the electronic mail with the picture of the humping rabbits (thank you Miss Iceland and Miss Spain 2007), or the jingle on my comments, my Christmas present to myself (hour long phone call to the woman in America who has two of the most beautiful babies in the whole world, Mr. T and Ms. Z), or the actual Christmas Eve that came last night.

It might be the short and sexy red hot hooded Ferrari bathrobe I got from AB.

Or feeding my son traditional Danish Christmas meal.
Or watching his father carry him as we danced around the Christmas tree.

I have a hunch what it was though.
I think Christmas is about celebrating the birth of love.
The Danes totally go for the hearts around Christmas so I think someone Danish must agree with me.

So love moved in and it was the best love there is, namely love in action.
Tonight a group of people I know took action to be there for another human being in need. Some of those people don't even know who they are helping and they don't care. Those are people who have Christmas the whole year round because they understand the true meaning of the birth of love.
Love is unconditional and serving.

My big day is tomorrow.
Tonight was bigger though.
I get chills when I experience love in action. It is because I have experienced being on the receiving end of a love like this. I have experienced strangers helping me in need, people showing up for what at the time seemed to be no reason.
This is how I learned about love.
It is the best lesson I can wish for anyone.

Sounds weird and complicated?
For those of you who are out there looking for love, here is a simpler version for you:

You cannot get it unless you give it.

A friend of mine and a man whom I loved very much passed away this year. His name was John C. He would have called this a blessing.
I feel blessed.
I miss him.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

There is no Christmas spirit in this house.
I have made an effort to cheer up the place with some Bing and some Elly og Vilhjalmur, but it's just not reaching it's hights like it usually does.

You see, I am a child of Christmas.
I am raised in a house that is so heavily decorated this time each year that I would invite people home to see how insane it was.
My mother loves Christmas.
I love Christmas.
I love Christmas decorations.
I love the lights.
Iceland goes bananas with the lights, the electricity being so cheap and all.
My dad used to take me for a drive every year, and we'd drive around town to look at the lights.

My mother and I love Christmas so much that one year we really had to pull ourselves together and take down the decorations before my birthday in February.

I always decorate.
I buy one new decorative item a year, if not three.
My tree usually has things from every country I have visited.

Except this year.
There are a few things that are fucking up my internal Christmas clock here.

No tree.
No decorations.
No baking.
No cleaning.
Not even checked if I have something nice to wear.
And no winter!

It's like living in California.
Okay, maybe not, but the weather her has been so amazing.
There is not a feeling of Christmas at all.

I think it might hit me when I come home to Iceland.
Maybe Christmas Eve with AB's family.
I'm sure it will be nice.

Nevertheless, it feels weird that I don't have a Christmas feeling.
It's like a normal weekend.
Or worse, it's like a Wednesday.

This is what it is supposed to look like

The Minilla search always leads me to cool links. Here is an interwiew with a Kaiju maker.

I love finding people other people might call nerds and seeing how amazingly successful they are doing what they love.
Much unlike the football team Throttur.

Every morning, when I wake up, I write a post in my mind.
My morning posts are very witty and intelligent.
By noon they are forgotten.

I think their substance has something to do with being a tired mom making oatmeal porridge.
You can all see the humor in that, can't you?

And then there is Minilla, full of life and smiles, shouting at his mother to bring on the porridge.
The mother needs to pee but has to get that porridge going because Minilla is not your average mini-monster and can roar quite loudly for an 8 month old.

Finally, porridge on the table, three or four spoons porridge down the belly and Minilla is off, having spotted a toy on the floor.
Mommy can pee now.

This is how my day starts, every day.

People in Iceland are now writing me, saying "see you in 5 days!"

AB dropped by this evening.
Slept for an hour.
At pizza.
Went back to work.
Said he didn't know when he would come home.

Anyone notice that I am missing my man a lot?

I knew this when I met him, I knew this is the nature of his field. This is just called working freelance. You take all the jobs you can get while you can get them, say yes to everyone you want to ask you twice.
And in film, every day costs a fortune, so you pack as much in as you can.

Even though I knew, it still sucks.

I wanted to call my girl in New York this evening (daytime in New York state) but I rememberred it is Thursday.

Thursdays she goes into the city.

I love that I know that about her.

Minilla now cries when people leave the house.
He looks at the door closing and starts crying.
He cries the most when his daddy leaves for work.
He totally flipped out when I was going to take out the garbage.
I just dropped it.
Garbage stayed in that day.

But that wasn't what I was going to blog about.
I was going to blog about something completely different and now I forgot.

Just a little bit less poor.

AB is working like a mad man.
Again.

And now we're rich.
Again.

Not that I noticed us getting poor.
Nobody has gone hungry.

Our 5 month pregnancy leave left our accounts kinda empty and then we bought a house. So AB is working to get us on top.
Again.

AB has lost a few nights sleep.
Again.

He came home this morning and slept for an hour before catching a plane to Sweeden.
He is counting the days until Christmas because Christmas is going to be a sleep vacation.
Again.

Here is a man who hasn't slept for the past 33 years.

Actually, our last vacation nobody slept because Minilla kept us awake.
I can't wait to go home to Iceland and see my family and friends. I know that my family awaits Minilla.

I am a bit nervous taking Minilla home because he isn't used to so many people and loud laughter makes him cry.
I am afraid he is going to be terrified because I have a large family that laughs a lot and laughs loudly.
Last time he saw them he was so tiny he doesn't remember any of them.
That is a bit sad.

But hey, he'll get to hang out with my people for a whole month!
I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait.

My lovely Prinsupessa is graduating today.
She is graduating from no less than two schools and she made the graduation speech for one of them.
At the same time she has been working at a hospital and now, during the Christmas season, she has added on another job at a store, which she goes to after work at the first job she is working with the two schools.

Exams at two schools and two jobs.
If anyone thinks this is weird or crazy then I have one explanation.
She is an Icelandic woman.
We have a word for this.
It's called Dugleg.

Dugleg is frequently used over Icelandic women.
It is not uncommon to hear " ... and she is a single mother with three kids, works a full time job and is finishing her masters at the university on the side. She is so dugleg!"

No wonder the girl hasn't blogged since Ramadan.

To you, my dearest, if you read this, congratulations!
I wish I was there to hear your speech.
I hope you get that job you are auditioning for next week. You deserve to have all your dreams fulfilled.
Now start dreaming girl!

As you all know, we just had a kid and bought a house.
Many have advised us to get married.
The married people have advised us to get married.
The others don't give a shit.

We have gone against the advice and chosen to visit a lawyer instead.

I don't know why AB doesn't want to get married. I think it is because he want's a big party and there was no such party on our budget when we decided to buy the house. Also, the "big party craving" got filled this summer at Minilla's baptism.
I know it has nothing to do with his feelings for me or his ability to commit.

In my case, I refuse to get married unless properly proposed to first and I haven't been proposed to so I ain't getting married.
I'm not feeling a great need to get married and refuse to consider marrying because of safety reasons. Don't want to get married to feel safe from society nor safe in society. I'd get married for LUV and God.
And that's a big statement coming from a girl who worships the word SAFE.

Anywho.
I totally reccomend doing this stuff with a lawyer if you're not into getting married. The whole thing turned out to be a piece of cake.

I am sure that the key to this is making the legal claims beforehand, instead of fighting about them afterwards.
This is such a common thing to do that it was routine for the lawyer.

The document made me feel SAFE. Actually safer than married, and a lot better off financially.
Now the married people can stop asking and start envying.

I'll share this with you though.
If I would get married, it would be to AB.

Who would have thought?

I am not going to court in January because of my stupido upstairs neighbour.
The lawyer put AB up as a witness and not me.

I am not sure how I feel about that but hey, it's out of my hands now. I feel I would have done well for the case in court. When the whole thing is over, we are out anyways.

Now I can just concentrate on enjoying Christmas.

Jingle bells ...

Hi everyone.
It's me.
Skotta the House Owner.

I've been away but now I'm back.
Why has she been away, you might ask?

Well, there was a demonstration here Saturday that us locals got a wiff off, and we were told it might get brutal.
And so it did.

There were fires lit in the streets, cares crashed, banks broken into, stores trashed.
Since we live in the middle of the most popular marching neighbourhood, an old socialistic hood next to a part that always has the May 1st rallies, we get a wiff of some teargas every time the police needs to gas the protesting public.

So in stead of just closing all windows I decided to take my Minilla and get the heck out of the neighbourhood.

I am glad we are moving.

I am happy I wasn't born in Irak.

Coming home again and seeing the devistation was just heartbreaking. It is always sad when somebodys anger hits a home run in the wrong persons yard.
Shit happens to good people, I said to a friend the other day.

So, on a happier front:
I am going to Iceland next week.
I will be in Iceland for most of January and would have stayed longer if it wasn't for the court case.
What court case?
Well, the stupid neighbour court case, of course!

Boy living above our apartment is to go on trial for the noise and disturbances caused to his neighbours over the past 3 years. Not kidding, this idiot has been on since 2003 and now his time is up.
Unfortunately, his trial disturbs my time in Iceland.

This is not a bad thing.
A bad thing is something much worse.
And my life is good.

And here is a picture of some people willing to defend an old house that belongs to a religious cult in the North Bridge in Copenhagen.

You might ask yourselves .. and I will answer that this is absoloutly true.
Those are the people who inhabit the house, the cult owns the building and is trying to throw them out.
Instead they drive me out.

I wonder why the one with the breasts has a more surprised look than the others?
Why isn't she as evil looking?

I cannot belive how priviledge I am.
A friend has asked me if I will be present when she gives birth.

This is such a gift.
I am so lucky to be able to do this.
I live two minutes away from the hospital, and about 10 minutes away from her, so I can be called out on a short notice.
She is giving birth in the beginning of february.
I am home january 18th so I am praying she won't give birth until she is due.

I can't believe she asked me!
What an honor.

This woman impresses me and this video is pretty cool with some nice coreography.

More time killed on YouTube.
And why watch this looong Japanese video of a man with bathing cap dance to Judas Priest?
To see his fans in the background who know all the moves.
And for the comments and responses column.
Actually, it's Taro Yamamoto, famous for is part in Battle Royale.
Quite a bloody movie.
I actually want to see it even though the clips on YouTube are grusome.
I think a user called XSilver has YouTubed the whole movie.

I don't think any nation makes movies like the Japanese.
No Bollywood there.

AB is at work, I am awake, Minilla is asleep.
It's julefrokost weekend, which means parties in the hood.
No sleep for the sober.

For the Americans, Julefrokost is the annual Christmas party. This is a party where the Danes seem to loose sanity, make out with their married boss and photocopy their bums. According to this article in Politiken, embarrassing videos from julefrokost evenings, taken with mobile phones and posted on the internet, have now reached over 150.000. So, not only do they get pissed together, they document it. Those can be found at www.ViralVideoChart.com.

The paper also tells that on Mondays after the julefrokost weekends, sale of abortion pills (the day after pill) goes up 25%.

I don't get this kareoke thing.
It's popularity is getting way out of hand.
I dont' really know it is kareoke, I am just assuming because my homegirl just passed on a kareoke julefrokost.
All I know is that there is so much noise in my bedroom there is no way I can sleep.

So I look at kitchens and bathrooms to get an inspiration for our new house.

And I find a chest of drawers that I just have to have and it can only be bought in another country.
Darn.

This rarely happens with furniture but I am totally in love with this:

And just about everything else from Habitat.

I was reading the Queens Christmas Calender where she links to two Christmas Coca Cola ads. It reminded me of my favorite so I decided to see if I could find it on YouTube.

Here is what I found. The original Cola ad from 1971 that was theme to my favorite Christmas ad.

And I found a Chinese one. You won't catch me repeating that.

And then there was this horrid thing. Also a Coke ad.

Enjoy!

I got a gig! I got a gig!

Kinda.

Well, the Danish Art Therapy Association is has a weekend of lectures and workshops every year. This year they advertised for someone to talk about art therapy and paedagogik (a danish word for some kind of a mixture of educational and developmental theories and practices, they have a university for it but nobody else knows what it is, and it's not teaching).

I wrote them back that I didn't really know if it was interesting to anyone but that I am an art therapist and have been working as a paedagog for soon to be 5 years.
I told them I didn't know anything about paedagogik but nobody had complained so far so I guess I could tell them what I had been doing with the kids.

They called me back.
They were thrilled.
And I am booked for a sunday morning session with about 30 people in March.
In Danish.
If I would need extra time for meditation and for the audience to finish their paintings?

Shite.

I softly explained that I didn't do meditation and that I made a clear distinction between practicing art therapy and educating others about art therapy. I told them I woudn't be doing any art therapy with the art therapists, they would have to go their own therapists for that.

They were even more thrilled.
I am now labelled New And Exciting.

Shite. Shite.

Oi, I'll come up with something.
I have until March.

But there will be no painting.
I am not running a self-help group session for elderly ladies.
Not getting paid for it but it will be great practice.

Whoda thought?

Minilla turns out to be a normal baby.
And we thought he was just weird happy all the time.
Nooooo, he turned out to be normal.

The day came the teeth started itching and hurting.
When I write teeth I actually mean gums.

Three days of "whiny" take it's toll on the mothers migraine tendencies.
Naughty Minilla, you get on my nerves.

Until I realized that he isn't being annoying on purpose.
He is actually hurting.

So whiny Minilla is now treated nicely and the mother and father are happy that he is a normal baby. Normal babys make a sound when they hurt.
We've just been incredably lucky so far.
And Minilla is a baby that smiles through the tears.

I promised you an update.

Just to make things a tad bit more exiting, the current owners of the house didn't show up to sign yesterday. The man was called out for work and will be able to sign tomorrow.

Raise your hand all of you who think they are stalling because they have a better offer. Then raise your hand those of you who think I am paranoid because I think my brain rules the world and I jinxed it by telling everyone.

Which leaves me with the question

How many Pepperidge Farm Chocolate Chunk Milk Chocolate Macadamia Sausalito Crisp Cookies can one eat in a row?

Here's what I wrote my girl in New York (at least on Thursdays) just about a second ago:

Ello luv.
Happy birthday!

Guess what I did on Friday?
Bought a house!

Well, I signed and the current owners are supposedly coming in on Monday to sign.
So, keep your fingers crossed that they don't get second thoughts this weekend.

love you
Skotta

Stay tuned tomorrow for an update.
