Wednesday, February 14, 2007 Sorry you guys who only read "foreign languages", but to the rest of you, here is a link in Icelandic. This writer calls herself Mengella and has something on her mind. I loved reading this but then again, you know me, I tend to lean to the dark side. Enjoy! Labels: Of fun and games, Of the fair country posted by Skotta | 6:17 PM |Sunday, February 04, 2007 We have been looking at tiles. You can't imagine how tireing that can be. Ones head goes completely bong bong. ![]() There is a lot of weird stuff out there ![]() and we have different tastes ![]() so we can't make up our minds. How does one pick tiles? Do you go for something fun or something classic? My problem with classic is that it is usually something "I could live with" but really bores me to death. I tend to go for fun wich will ultimately drive us crazy! Ces't la vie. Minilla has learned to crawl much to our relief and terror. He had developed this howl that was really tireing but his bitch of a mother refused to indulge him and move him from place to place. This worked, he now crowls, and has stopped howling. He is making such rapid developements these days. Now we are just constantly alert because he goes everywhere. Very happy chap. We are at Amma's now. Amma i Ordrup, there is. Amma i Ordrup is the Danish grandmother. In Danish, her grandmother title is Farmor (Father's Mother) but we have named her Amma, Icelandic style. In Icelandic, both father's mother and mother's mother (in Danish farmor and mormor) are called amma. In my family we define the ammas by location, so the Danish one is Amma i Ordrup (amma that lives in Ordrup) and the Icelandic one is Amma i Klapparhlid (amma that lives in Klapparhlid). In Danish, the farfar and morfar (paternal grandfather and maternal grandfather) would be the words used, while in Icelandic the word is afi. Minilla has only an Afi i Klapparhlid because Afi i Ordrup passed away before Minilla was born. So what else is new? Minilla got a new toy. ![]() I am a fan of Fisher Price. Just because. Nostalgic, I think. I am a succer for packaging, labels that make me feel safe, etc. It's horrible. I bought some meat at the supermarket the other day just because it was packed the same way you get when you buy it fresh at the butchers. Minilla wants to push buttons, he wants my phone, he wants the remote control. He wants stuff made out of metal, not play safe plastic. AB (or Godzilla, whatever you prefer) has gotten the assignment to get the little guy some stuff from his work. There should be plenty of old gadgets lying around out there where he works. Well. Other news. I got a nice letter the other day which I have answered but not mailed yet. It is a real letter, written with a pen! I love those!! I have a secret wish that the letter writer starts a blog but at the same time I get scared that if she blogged I wouldn't get a real letter again. I read on a serenity card another friend gave me, that most of the things we worry about are things that never actually happen. So I incourage her to blog about all her travels for the rest of us to enjoy. She is a terrific pen and a very bright and humorous person. She'd be a delight to read. So there you have it. Please start a blog. And finally, the impending birth is making me and everybody around me stand on our toes. The courageous mother started the other night and then everything stopped. The mucus plug is out, followed by some contractions, so the baby will be here within the next couple of weeks. That we kind of knew but the little earthquakes the other night got us into position. We are all very happy and exited. Everything is ready for the baby. P.S. I'll let you in on a little secret. I might go to school again. I'm looking into it and AB supports the idea 1000%. How does Dr. Skotta sound to you? Labels: News from the home front, Of the fair country posted by Skotta | 1:20 PM |Saturday, January 27, 2007 I just want to bring to your notice that the Queen has written an article published on Iceland Review's homepage. The article is great. Read it, read it. For those not familiar with Iceland Review, it is probably the oldest, most respected tourist information magazine published in Iceland. I remember before the days of the internet that a subscribtion to Iceland Review was often a gift to a foreign visitor. Those were the days when you only saw the occational tourist in Iceland, most of them enduring and a bit crazy, if they weren't working for a bank and stayed in a hotel. It was the time when nobody came to Iceland without having dinner and tours to Thingvellir with an Icelandic family, all members dragged with. The ones that returned madly in love with the country were called"Friend of Iceland" or "Islandsvinur". Today, sadly, we drive busloads of tourists around tourist spots, try to rip them off with little respect, tell them all the weirdest stuff about our culture, and try not to have anything to do with them otherwise. Today, Islandsvinur is something said in sarcasm about a Hollywood actor that shows up in town, wondering why the women are so drunk. "Yeah, I'm definetly coming again, the girls are loose!" What Iceland Review had, that no other magazine had, was and is Pall Stefanson. Palli's photos (Palli is short for Pall, another weirdo Icelandic thing, shortenings can be longer than the original name) did the mag. At times there were not that many articles but pages and pages of Icelandic landscapes that would blow your mind. Check out Palli and Nanna. They are the essence of Iceland, a woman with great wit and intelligence and a man with a passion. Labels: Of the fair country posted by Skotta | 10:23 AM | |
