Friday, May 27, 2005 You are right. I am home. God, I don't know where to start! How about the beginning? We were dead tired but very ready for a vacation after 3 pm on May 5th. AB had worked a quadruple day's work (in a 17 hour day he did 38 of something you do 10 a day of ... don't know what it was but for me that is called quadruple work) but we drove off anyway due to need to start our vacation. We drove to Middelfart. In this little otherwise uncharming town there is a oh so charming little "secret" harbor where there is a hotel and a restaurant that just have peace and quiet written all over them. After a heavenly meal we slept peacefully at the hotel. Being the only guests, we got the suite, and a breakfast buffet that is topped only by an Italian 3 star breakfast. Day two We drove off and drove and drove for about 12 hours. Tired AB got us to a little village in Schwaben district of Germany. There we entered a Knaepe (a german pub) which turned out to be a Greek restaurant when we came inside. I would describe the atmosphere as a touch of redneck German. At leas there were heaps of mullets. I do believe I got the Aphrodite platter. Something told us to leave although there were "rooms at the inn". We drove off into the darkness. Very aware of the fact that it was late and chances of us finding a room were slimming. Here starts the "too tired to think but making an effort anyway" part of the trip. We made a decision to send messages to our dear friend and saviour (explained later) and have her find a hotel in Zurich which we would then book, either by telephone or internet. She did. Champ. A hotel with a garage (the importance of safe parking is huge for the sports car owner). We called. No room. We got a number of another hotel, no answer. May have had something to do with the fact that the number was a letter longer than the first one we called. After a number of sms messages to our hero in Copenhagen (can we book over the internet? No, you have to do that a day in advance ... etc.) the driver (AB) made the wise decision to park the car in a small village and send yours truly in to ask for a room. No. But Gasthof Zur Post had a room for us. A small grungy 70's style room (kinda from the 80's but this is Nowhere, Germany so they were a bit behind in the 80's) with burgundy velvet drapes and a sole basket of dried flowers hanging on the wall. Kinda like cool music video grungy except this was the real thing. And we loved it. Knocked out by 10 pm. Day three Woke up and had a nice breakfast of brotchen, vanilla yoghurt and more nice Russian looking things Germans eat for breakfast. This is where we had the best eggs ever. Probably from very happy hens from next door. Drove off. Next stop Switzerland. A truck stop that meant business. It was really a mall with a big restaurant (American style restaurant, kinda like in the Museum of Natural History). We ate lovely food and AB bought the coolest Swiss Army Knife on earth (the one that does everything but your laundry). That day we started driving down Route Napoleon. We ate a pizza in Vif and as there are no hotels in Vif we drove on to Monetier Allemont. We got the suite again. Let me explain. AB has this thing with bath tubs. This is a luxury in most of Europe (exept Iceland where the thermal water is allmost free). He asks for a tub at every hotel we visit. Usually, only the suites have bath tubs. This one had, as an added bonus, the infamous French electric toilet. I was very grateful for that as the pizzeria in Vif only had a hole in the ground. (Coming from a "water country" I am not so trained in the skill of "aiming for the hole" although I have to say that due to many camping trips and good thighs I did excellently). Day four After a good nights sleep we awoke to the freshness of the French Alps. It was lovely. I was still doing working hours (up at 6 am) so I was usually ready an hour before AB reached conciousness. Usually 15 minutes before breakfast was taken off the tables. During this trip I got quite good at being very sweet and patient and walking very fast down to breakfast. Now, if we found the German breakfast "dry", the French one was defenetly "meager". Lovely croissant and a cup of coffee. Off we drove again. The plan was to be in Cannes around noon so AB could pick up our nice friends at the Nice airport at 3 pm. The French Alps had another idea. You drive very, very slowly on Route Napoleon. Up a mountain and down a mountain, around a mountain and around a mountain. Like in Iceland, just sloooowwwer. You can'r really pass a car on this route. So if anyone is driving even slower than sloooowwwwly, you just form a train of cars driving slooooowwwwlier than slooooowwww. I think we were in Cannes by 5 pm. We got two apartments but because the balcony wiew was over the railroad tracks we decided to ask the ever so nice people in the reception if we could have other ones. We could indeed. This is when I decide to reccommend Pierre et Vacances to anyone who cares to listen. We got two beautiful apartments, one that roomed 7 and another that roomed 5. AB was so exhausted that he decided to take a power nap before driving to Nice. He drove off around 7 pm and came close to not returning ... All went well though and 4 happy campers slept beautifully until noon next day. Well not quite true. One slept until 7 am, the next two until noon, and the last one until two days later. We had an amazing week in Cannes hanging out with our friends. We spent time in Cannes, Nice and Antibes, and one night we had dinner in St. Tropes. We slept and ate and slept and ate and slept and ate. I love the food in France. Just outside our place there was a market every morning. Typical breakfast consisted of baguettes and croissants, pate and sausages, two or three different types of cheese, fresh fruit, fruit juice, eggs, coffee and tea. And cake. The French can make cake (according to Marie Antoinette) and AB decided that every morning he would test a new cake. And this he did. After breakfast we could either take a dip in the pool or cross the street and go to the beach. Or whatever. On the Thursday we were joined by one of AB's co-workers, a lovely lady whom I truly enjoyed getting to know. Soon more joined in ... and all in all there were 96 nights spent in those two apartments (I think there were about 17 people staying). One apartment was declared a Party Zone and the other one the Eagles Nest. Guess where the boss and his lady kept themselves? We had the most amazing mountain wiew from our balcony (where we had all the food each morning). And you might think that this was all fun and games ... oh no, work was involved. The little lady had to walk her litle walk up the red carpet. All about that, and more, later. posted by Skotta | 6:42 PM | Tuesday, May 03, 2005 Why am I not packing? Because I am listening to Missy Elliot. I am listening to ![]() I admit, I am a bit slow on the uptake ... I just bought it. I also bought the soundtrack to 101 Reykjavik and to a Danish film called Nordkraft. So far, Nordkraft is better. Or at least easier on the ear first time around. I also got Rufus Wainwright who is playing in Vega soon. My plan was to get music for the road. Now my plan is to bring Missy and Nordkraft and mix a few tapes (as we said in the old days). My movie date bailed out when we realised that there is nothing worth seing at the Danish theaters tonight. Danes choose crappy movies ... only B movies in theaters here apart from the occational good Danish movie. And then it is a darned good movie. I have to admit, I have not seen anything for a while that has blown me away. I miss it. I miss the thrill I got when I saw Happiness and Idioterne. Arw, twas a good year. Okay, better start packing now. I am packing for both of us as Amazing Boyfriend is shooting a video for Bikstok Rogsystem for the rest of the evening. This time tomorrow I will be somewhere in Germany. posted by Skotta | 8:55 PM | Sunday, May 01, 2005 I am on my wayyyyy to Cannes! Well, not quite yet. But I am starting to pack. We have decided to drive off on Wednesday already and we don't have to be in Cannes until Saturday. This might give us a chance to visit Cologne ... I haven't been there since 1997. 3 days to go. Update on the Film Festival thingie: I do not only have a VIP pass, I now have an invitation to the Manderlay afterparty. I am just telling you now, you might as well get it straight ... I will write no gossip on this page. So don't expect any juice. Well. I just wanted to link you all to the Barbapapa Family (for fun and games). ![]() This is Barbabeau. He is my favorite. To those who know me well this will not come as a surprise. He is hary and therefor unique. AB just brought me a little statue of him from Paris. I love AB. And finally, due to many requests, I am giving you Belinda. I got the link originally from Dr. Gunni and then e-mailed from the Cutest Couple in Copenhagen. posted by Skotta | 10:11 PM | |
