Now where was I tonight?

I went to the movies again. Saw the latest by the Cohen brothers.
Not impressed.
As much as I "more-than-tolerated-otherwise-much-hated" Uma Thurman yesterday, I have no sympathy with Catherine Z Jones. She allmost won me over in Chicago, but lost it again in this movie. And the "new Clark Gable" plays the same role over as he did in O Brother Where Art Thou but with less charm this time.

After the movie I went to this little hole in the ground place called "White Lamb".

This old place has been there since 1807 and the jazz musicians playing tonight were as old as the gang in Buena Vista Social Club. They played with the same energy and joy at least.
I can't help but think about all those young lions I know in the jazz world, knowing that this is probably where they will all end up one day, wrinkled, shaky, and soaked in alcohol, hopefully still with a smile on their face.
I reccomend the place.

Kill Bill

Completely blown away by this movie. Came out of the theater thinking that I was glad the world created geniouses that made movies. I am so glad I avoided all reviews and had no idea what I was about to witness on the screen. Stuff stolen from everywhere but it works like magic. The movie is a masterpiece, a feast for all senses. Loved the Japanese anime part.
Can't say more for now, am still enjoying all the splatter and the brilliant sound effects still bubbling in my brain.
I am definetly getting my hands on the sound track.

Now playing (on the bike):

That's the way, aha aha, I like it, aha aha.
Need I say more?

Come a long way means...

I have nothing againgst raising kids in the US.
Most of my US friends are raised in the US, my bro has raised kids in the US, some of my US friends are raising kids in the US (those who are not raising cats, we'll get to that one later).

My US friends raised in the US have turned out to be brilliant people.
Many of my European friends raised in Europe are very fucked up indeed.

The Red Cross is moving all their staff from Bagdad after suicide bombings outside their headquarters this morning. 42 people killed in Bagdad this morning, in 3 bomings within 45 minutes.

Salam Pax was away for a while but is now back. I know I keep linking you guys to this page... he is really worth the time it takes reading his blog, even though he is famous now.

I am really not sure why I am so interested in what is happening over there. There have been wars before in the world and I couldn't have cared less. For some reason this specific war enrages me.

Maybe because I was living in the US when Bush took the White House. If a little girl ever got a culture shock, then it was realizing that "the land of the free" was actually not a democracy. That's when I decided not to spend longer time than needed in the US and definetly not raise kids over there.

I have come a long way since then... but not further than getting furious over the war in Iraq.

Another thing that gets me angry...
The new passports. I hate them. I also hate the idea of my eye being scanned whenever I pass a border. They are working on the eye scan here in Europe to meet American "need" for safety.
Not kidding.

Paranoid, anyone?

And now for something completely different...

I was reading the Moggi (Morgunbladid, an Icelandic news paper) and they told of an interesting research that an Icelandic woman (Bryndis Bjork Astgeirsdottir) did for her masters thesis.

She did a survey among Icelandic kids aged 16-19, asking them if they had ever prostituted themselves (i.e. for drugs, money, housing or food).
2% of the kids had once or more often accepted payment for sexual favors.
What kind of surprised me, was that prostitution was more common among the boys than the girls, 3.1% of the boys prostituted themselves and 1% of the girls.

I suspect that the reason for this outcome is that the girls are giving it away for free... not being street wise enough to get more then negative attention in return for their sexual favors.

On a world scale 2% doesn't seem a lot. In Iceland it's the population of a whole town.

To put these numbers into perspective:
During a snow slide, a big part of a small town in Iceland was wiped out and the nation was in mourning. Allmost everyone new someone that had died or was connected to someone who was related to people in that town. It was as big of a shock for Iceland as 9/11 was for the US.
28 people died.

The company I keep...

My visitor tonight figured out in a second that DayQuil has speed in it and you need 12 capsules to get a high.

I restrained from asking her how much Tiramisu one has to eat to get drunk...

And kept her from my NyQuil.

I still have a cold.
And it is freezing in Denmark.

The weather came from Siberia. It is in my neighbourhood now.
Not kidding.
At least it feels that way.

Well, I got a lot done today. This is a gene I have from my mother; it is called "active-when-sick-gene".

Among other things, I called a friend who has a broken heart. Well, at least he is finding out that he indeed has a heart.

It made me think about what we can do to take care of our hearts, those of us who have hearts that hurt when punched. His heart (which is a heart I admire and love) definetly took a beating.

Once I was asked to make a drawing of my heart. I drew myself with a heart aproximately where the heart is (see how smart I am?). Well, it was pointed out to me that the heart I drew looked like a pin or a broach.
That kind of made me think. A pin can hurt pretty badly if placed incorrectly.
I concluded that maybe it would be better for me to have my heart on the inside rather than the outside.

I haven't managed that yet.
I don't know if I ever will.
But it is important info to have about oneself. I get less surprised now when my heart gets hurt, I get over it quicker. I sometimes see it coming and can put it in my pocket before severe damage is done.

But it is true, those of us who have our hearts open risk getting hurt.
For me, it has been totally worth the risk.
And I'll do it again in a minute.

I do not have Sinusitis

I do have a cold though.
Somewhere in my bag of tricks I found some NyQuil and DayQuil and that is pulling me through. Most of the kids at work are sick, most of the staff is sick, and my boss has got pneumonia.

This week is "American Week" at Netto (the cheap supermarket). They offered special treats like
Goldfish with pizza flavor,
an unknown brand of crunchy peanut butter,
and unknown brand yellow cake mix,
same unknown brand macaroni & cheese box,
Fast Shake pancake mix,
Mixed nuts,
Fajita-kit,
American Style Deep Pan Pizza with pepperoni,
Rocky Mountain Marshmallows,
and last but not least...

Duncan Hines cake mix.

So I went for Duncan again.

A box of cake mix costs 53 dkr. at the American store, Netto had them for 18 dkr.
Need I say more?
Now I just have to get to the American store for the fudge. Which is 53 a pop. Well, I am then paying 75 dkr for my cake in stead of 106. Main thing is it is good cake.
And dark fudge brownies.
And chewy fudge brownies.
And cranberry muffins.
And blueberry muffins.
And golden sugar cookies.

I don't think it will be hard to get people to come eat cake with me.

Back.
Brace yourselves, it's a long blog.

Although I figured that fenomenas like friendster and blogger are sites for internet junkies who want to prove to other internet junkies that they have a life, I decided to continue doing so while actually trying to get a life....

So, this is what my life has been for the past week:

Packed for Koloni.
Danes send their kids out of town on Koloni already in kindergarten. This means taking off without parents for a week. This is supposedly healthy for the kids. I suspect the real purpose is to give the parents a week off from being parents.
The kids I took out of town this past week are barely out of kindergarten and the trip was somewhat traumatizing for most of them.
They did have a lot of fun though.

We took 40 kids out of town.
The theme this year was "Role playing" as in knights and princesses, fairies and monsters.
For this I packed:
Sleeping bag
Pajamas
Undies
Towel
Soap and shampoo
Tooth brush
Boots
Wool sweater
5 pairs of socks
Knife
Flash light
Red dress
Wings and tiara
Headache pills, loads of them

Off we went Monday morning. Kids were already crazed on the bus, stuffed with candy to keep them from crying when saying goodbye to their parents.

When we arrived whe discovered that it was actually a Christian Koloni. There were crosses everywhere and quotes from the bible on the walls, posters of starving kids in Africa and a pulpit with a huge cross on it. We couldn't take any of it down because it was screwed to the walls. It kind of freaked most of us out.

First thing we did after settling in the house was to play "war". We made dough which was used as ammo, rolled into little bullets that were blown through tubes. I have millions of little blue bruses on my thighs and arms after the bloody things. I was stalked by this tiny little girl who was unbelievably good at shooting with this. Swords and axes were also used as weapons.
The kids got their agression out, running after each other and ambushing each other, while on a sugar high.

When evening came all were exhausted, crying and missing their moms. Those who weren't peeing in their pants were throwing up. One managed to pee all the way up to his pillow. Fireman potential.

Other activities during Koloni were a treasure hunt, bon fire, and a ball. We also played more wars. Many of the kids were pretty freaked out after the treasure hunt because they met the Blue Lady in the woods. Quite a few that had a hard time sleeping that night. The ball was great. Everything decorated mideval style and the kids dressed up in costumes.

I was primarily with my group of 5 handicapped charmers. One woke up screaming every 5 minutes, waking up the other ones. Busy first night, the second and third were a little bit better as the screamer was more calm and the others didn't wake up, having gotten used to her screams.

My job was mostly making sure that they didn't binge during breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Another task was to get them out of the house. It is amazing how smart a severely brain damaged kid can get when it wants to crawl into its sleeping bag during the day.
She is also the one with no short term memory. Athough it must be terrible to live with, it is hilarious at times. Every time she stood up she couldn't remember where she sat when she came back to the table. It was also hard when there was a tray of cookies on the table, to be told that she had actually already had hers. She forgot that she had eaten one.

The kids did great during the treasure hunt. The ones with the best sense of smell realized at once who the Blue Lady was and told the others. Yes, I am not kidding, they smelled who the person was. Not unusual for brain damaged kids to have a really strong sense of smell, I have worked with kids who have had to smell me to be able to identify me.

My kids were not as strong when it came to playing war, although we had practized this game at home. They are slower than the other kids and get killed right away, and being sore loosers they tend to freak out before remembering that they only have to count to ten to be alive again.

My princesses were the prettiest at the ball, with their home made abstract tiaras (they are not really sharp with scissors and glue).
I had brought some nail polish with me, hoping that I could give the autistic one a manicure. She hates having her hands touched, so her nails are never cut and always dirty. After seeing the others getting the brightest red (red being the favorite color) on their fingernails, she allowed me to paint her nails.
All of them got to try my lipstic. I wish I could post the pictures on this site and share this with you guys. No can do.

One of my favorite moments during this Koloni was taking two of the girls out after dark, into the woods, with our flash lights. It was a first time for both of them and they loved it.

I was actually very proud of my group. They survived the whole ordeal. The agressive one didn't injure anyone, the autistic one didn't freak in the croud of screaming kids. Not bad. There are so many funny stories of our little fetal alcohol syndrom boy that I can't recite them here. Although not documented, the memory of my little muslim mongol girl throwing a wild sermon from the pulpit will live with me forever.

We were pretty beat when we came home 4 days later. The mother of the autistic girl got a bit of a shock seeing her girl with red fingernails that would pride any ho on the block. Hey, the girl picked the color...

To unwind.. the staff got together on Friday night. I danced until 5 am this morning, which resulted in me getting up at 6 pm today. It's been a while.

After flirting with the beautiful Italian guy at the pizzeria, I went out for coffee and backgammon. Saturday night and I just woke up, no reason to stay home. I covered three bars and met up with some girlfriends before biking home again.

See. I have a life.

I might have to land that pizza guy.

All better now.

Got a new bike.

Am supposed to pack a flash light and a knife.

Panic.

F*#&%(/%>%&!#%*

In front of my effin nose. Spend an hour at a cafe and when you come out the bike isn't there. Why the eff do I write effing in stead of just fucking! I am so fucking angry right now.
I loved my bike!
I can't live without a bike.

Happens all the fucking time here, second fucking bike I fucking get stolen in a fucking year.

I am buying myself a new one tomorrow.

To honor this god forsaken country I live in, I cannot leave today without adding this.

Very interesting. This is the most racistic country I have lived in (and I have lived in a few). Still both the Danish princes choose not to marry a Dane.
The next queen will be an Aussie.

Have been spending some time checking out www.friendster.com.
I have to admit, I haven't really found out what the purpose of the thing is, or if it is something that will be of some use to me. It has been fun to find out that some of my friends are using it, and that some of them are friends with friends of people in Denmark. What I do with that info is not clear.
Another experiment is this giving you yet another chance to express yourselves...

And now for something completely different

Now playing

Found this one on sale.
A message to my sys:
A must, a must, a must. The hit song is called Solskin, solskin, solskin. Others are Sommervind, Regnvejr, Søde mama, Iwan Iwanowitch, Boom bang-a-bang, og Den første gang er altid svær. You will love this one, get the man to find her in Rikisutvarpids collection as this cannot wait until X-mas. It will make you totally happy inside. Songs are anno 1964-1972. The lady's name is Grethe Ingmann. Was popular with her husband, mostly in Germany (it seems). I think she represented DK in The Eurovision Song Contest 1963.
Okay, maybe not a must but close. Get it anyway.

And here I go, linking you guys to yet another interesting site! To get you interested, it is written by a hermaphrodite and is really good. Here is so another one with Transgenders from history.

Don't ask me why I spend my evenings like this.

Hello again.

Decided to take a night in... a bit tired after the weekend.
It became one of those weekends where I did none of the things planned but got a hell of a lot done anyway.

Okay, now for the news.
Hullraiser got older this weekend. Many happy returns to the b-day boy. Read from his page that he had a hell of a party, which I missed...
Better start working on a b-day/christmas present. Knitting a scarf.
Just kidding.

Some of my favorite boys got scarfs last X-mas. Some of the boys aren't my favorites anymore, but that's a different story. They have warm necks.

While looking for this

I found this.

Among other things, I went to the movies this weekend. I will have to link this as it is illegal to paste the image on this page. Hate that.
Can't say the acting was good... can say that it was action packed. Have seen better fighting scenes though. Came out smiling, what more can you ask for?

Okay, burning chicken in the ove now....

The now playing section will wait until next blog.

In general, check out South African art, there has been good stuff coming from there.
